Active Shooter Training Exercise (Photos)
Several Montgomery County police officers participated in a training exercise at Julius West Middle School on April 2 in Rockville.
According to Officer Rebecca Innocenti, the training exercise consisted of diverting District 1 patrol officers off the road to the school where they were informed as part of the training exercise that an active shooter was inside the school. The city of Rockville police also participated in the training, Innocenti said.
Although there were teachers working, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students were off during the exercise.
Innocenti said training officers followed the responding officers through the school and then provided feedback on what the officers could have done better. She described the training exercise scenario as involving a man with a gun who had shot a student and who was still in the school.
According to Innocenti, this kind of training takes place regularly by Montgomery County police officers. She said she participated in a similar exercise several years ago after the Columbine incident.
