COTSA Raises $30,000 in Scholarships

cotsa-2016-galaCOTSA, a nonprofit made of up more than 21 Salvadoran communities hosted their Seventh Annual Anniversary Gala in Silver Spring.

This event is a way for residents representing the various communities in El Salvador to raise scholarship money for students in their hometowns.

“Usually we start paying tuition over there when you go to high school,” said Organizer Darwin Romero. “Over there, high school is kind of a mixture of high school and college.”

Roughly $32,000 in scholarship money was raised.

“We are helping a lot of students in different levels of their education,” said Romero. “Some are just starting high school where they have to pay so it becomes almost like a private school.”

COTSA stands for Comunidades Transnacionales Salvadoreñas.

Organizers say their next project will be providing wheel chairs for those in need.
