County Leaders Launch New Route to Connect to the Internet Faster (VIDEO)

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett joined area business leaders for the launch of a new way to connect to the internet.

Back in 2014, the County Executive introduced a six-point economic plan which included UltraMontgomery, an initiative that would create a fiber connection in Ashburn Virginia to grow opportunities for local businesses and universities.

“Ashburn started out originally as really one of the key hubs in the internet,” Phil Olivero, chief technology officer for Lightower Fiber Networks said. “Even today, a good 70 percent of that internet traffic goes in and out of the Ashburn area”

“It provides an alternate fiber route to the Northern Virginia data centers and it’s very important because most of the fiber routes go through Washington D.C. or Point of Rocks,” said Tom Collins, director of enterprise sales and marketing for Atlantech Online, Inc.

Instead of wireless internet that your smart phone uses for example, Fiber is tangible and adding this new technology means enhancing economic development in the region.

According to county leaders, this is an express way to the internet.

“No longer are there highways that take forever to get to the destination,”David Petr, president of the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation said. “But now we have the speed, redundancy and safety for your business which is one more reason for you to be successful.”

“Anytime we can enhance the broadband capabilities that we’re offering in the businesses we have locally. It really makes us to be able to market Rockville and Montgomery County as a great business location,” Laurie Boyer, executive director for the Rockville Economic Development Inc said.

Since major companies like Amazon and Microsoft Office house these services in Ashburn, eaders are confident this new data fiber means a better way to do business.
