Dining Hits & Misses At Montgomery Mall
A new $90 million expansion of Westfield Montgomery Mall has brought with it one of the most innovative and diverse dining experiences in the Washington, D.C. area. The mall’s food court has been transformed into a Dining Terrace with 40-foot high ceilings, a variety of seating options and an array of dining experiences to satisfy every taste. I went there recently to see how the project was coming along, as the cacophony of construction mixed with the sounds of cooking from several new eateries.
Here is a sample of what you will find at the new Dining Terrace:
My first stop was Bobby’s Burger Palace. Owned by famous chef and TV personality Bobby Flay.
From the décor to the rum spiked milkshakes, this place is incredible.
It’s a sit down restaurant, but make sure you join the line, order your food from the super friendly cashiers, take your small number plaque, sit down and prepare to have your taste buds happier than Pharrell Williams…”Cuz I’m happy!…..”
The first thing to arrival at my table was the Spiked Pineapple Coconut Rum milkshake. This drink was so creamy, full of flavor and actually tasted like coconut. I should have ordered two, because by the time my food arrived it was halfway gone (and my food arrival didn’t take long).
Next up was the Vegas Burger with a side of sweet potato fries and honey mustard dipping sauce. The sweet potato fries were well…sweet potatoes. But the certified Angus beef burger topped with white American cheese, Fresno red chilies and BBQ sauce was amazing! It was mildly spicy but very tolerable (but be prepared for some fire if you bite into any chili seeds). This burger has great texture and is very juicy. I didn’t even have to flavor it with ketchup. This burger is a MUST try.
My second stop for the day was Blaze Pizza. From the moment I walked in, the incredibly nice staff took great care of me. The pizzas are made fresh to order, allowing me to pick from their numerous toppings that they have on display.
It was actually a real treat to watch my pizza prepared, share some laughs with the staff and PRESTO my meal was done and out of the brick oven in a matter of minutes.
Of the many offerings, I decided to go for the Green Stripe pizza. Its a thinly made dough with pesto drizzled over chicken, red peppers, garlic, mozzarella and arugula.
On the menu, it sounded mouth watering. I really wanted to rave about this one. Sadly, it wasn’t very flavorful and had more of a “fresh” taste. If you are someone who values texture over flavor, this may be for you.
The Wicked Waffle eatery is in the main section of the food court. Again, I was thoroughly impressed by the friendliness of the staff, and the HUGE jars of Nutella on display. The variety of waffle combinations seemed endless. After taking a few minutes to look over the menu, I decided on the Tomato, Mozzarella and Arugula waffle with a drizzle of EVOO and Balsamic dressing.
I was very excited to try this concoction, but alas my taste buds registered a different story. The combination was not tasty at all: it actually tasted like a regular salad with waffles on top. Not good.
I do think this place is unique with tons of potential and I will try a different combination on my next visit.
After a little break I made my way over to Kraze Burger. I ordered their signature KB Original filled with tomatoes, onions, pickles, lettuce, cheese and a beef pattie on the most delicious bun.
I had been craving Kraze Burger since it opened last year. It’s not as good as Bobby’s but it is a higher end alternative to McDonalds, which remains a staple of the new Dining Terrace as well as old favorites like Chick-Fil-A, Auntie Annie’s and Jamba Juice. Be aware that Bobby’s Burger Palace, along with the spectacular yet always familiar The Cheesecake Factory are on the lower level of the mall. And speaking of the lower level, I actually saved room for dessert…
I almost didn’t have room for dessert, but I’m so glad I held it together and walked down to Yogi Castle. As soon as I entered, an eager employee offered me a small cup, a spoon and encouraged me to try any flavor I wanted.
I kept it light and settled on the Non-Dairy Mango Sunrise Sorbet topped with fresh fruit, coconut shreds and tiny chocolate chips. OMG it was sweet and cold and just what I needed to end my day of gluttony!
