Exhibit: A Harrowing Sight: John Singer Sargent’s World War I Mural “Gassed”

February 27, 6:00 pm at National Museum of Health and Medicine.


John Singer Sargent, one of America’s premier portrait painters, undertook a commission in 1917 to commemorate American and British involvement in World War I. After traveling to the front, he chose to depict soldiers wounded in a mustard gas attack. Join art historian Elizabeth Tebow in looking at the circumstances that led to the painting of this iconic work from the Great War, as well as the significance of the introduction of chemical warfare.
