Five Things to Know Today, Dec. 1, in Montgomery County

Today is Tuesday, Dec. 1, and it is Giving Tuesday. Make sure to support Montgomery County nonprofits during this time of economic uncertainty.

Here are five things to know in Montgomery County:

1. Donate to Montgomery Community Media: It’s been a challenging year for all with the coronavirus. We’ve been dedicated to providing Montgomery County residents with the latest news, media training classes, and programming to keep the community informed. 2. Council in Virtual Session: Montgomery County Council meets virtually at 9:30 a.m. and here’s a look at the agenda for the meeting. The meeting will be televised on County Cable Montgomery Channels Comcast HD 996 and SD6, RCN HD 1056 and SD 6, and Verizon 30. Additionally, it will be live-streamed on the council’s Facebook and Youtube channels.

3. Swearing-in Ceremony for School Board:  Montgomery County Public Schools’ Board of Education will swear in its newly elected member Lynne Harris (At-Large) and its re-elected members Shebra L. Evans (District 4) and Rebecca Smondrowski (District 2) today at 10 a.m. in Rockville. The ceremony is closed from the public due to the coronavirus pandemic.

4. Virtual Town Hall for World AIDS Day: Montgomery County is working to end the HIV epidemic by 2030 and because it’s Worlds AIDS Day, County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles is speaking at a virtual town hall today hosted by Montgomery County Health and Human Services. Panelists include Melvin Cauthen, DHHS administrator for HIV/STI services; Connor Hegel, LGBTQ services navigator for Sexual Minority Youth Assistance Leagues (SMYAL), a D.C. based organization; and Ronald Johnson, LGBTQ Democrats of Montgomery County. The town hall is from 1 to 2 p.m. and anyone interested in attending can register via Zoom.

5. COVID-19 Testing: Montgomery County health officials urge all residents to get tested for COVID-19 and will provide free walk-in and drive-through testing at 10 testing sites today. The schedule of clinics may be found here.
