Montgomery County police officers have charged 32-year-old Brian Werth, a former youth minister at St. Elizabeth Church in Rockville, with one count of fourth-degree sexual offense, one count of sexual abuse of a minor and second degree assault.

According to a police statement,  this investigation began after detectives were notified by Child Protective Services (CPS) that Werth allegedly had inappropriate sexual contact with a 16-year-old girl on or about May 20 during a youth event at the church. Police said during the investigation they learned that Werth had been texting the victim since the summer of 2014, and police said, the texts Werth sent to the victim were graphic and sexual in nature.

Police arrested Werth at his residence in Montgomery Village on Wednesday morning.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not come forward. Detectives are urging anyone with information regarding inappropriate contact involving Werth to contact the Special Victims Investigations Division at 240.773.5400.

The Archdiocese of Washington has posted a statement about this case on its website. You can read that statement in its entirety, here.
