Gaithersburg Mayor Meeting with Maryland Transportation Secretary Today
Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman is scheduled to meet with Maryland Transportation Secretary Peter Rahn today, in Hanover, to discuss the future of the Watkins Mill Road Interchange at I-270.
Just last month, Ashman and the five-member City Council sent a letter to State Highway Administration officials expressing concerns about proposed changes to the design of the interchange.
The leaders wrote that they were not supportive of anything less than a full interchange and they said any cost savings by design modifications, “would be outweighed by the negative economic development and vitality impacts to the city of Gaithersburg and the Upcounty area.”
City officials also asked to be included in any and all discussions about the project, which, they said, is located in the “heart of our community.”
The nine-member Montgomery County Council also sent a letter, to Rahn and Governor Larry Hogan, protesting any changes to the long-awaited interchange.
The Hogan administration has released contract documents for the Watkins Mill Interchange, a long-sought connection along Interstate 270 that had been the subject of jockeying between local politicians and the governor’s office.
