Gaithersburg observes Flag Day on June 14 with a ceremony conducted by the Gaithersburg Community Museum and Boy Scout Troop 1760. The ceremony takes place from 7 to 8 p.m. in Olde Towne Plaza located at 1 S. Summit Ave.

Flag Day celebrates the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777. It was established by the proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. June 14 was designated as the official day of observance by an Act of Congress signed by President Harry S. Truman in 1949.

Proper disposal of the American flag is an important part of honoring its significance. An American flag that has become worn, tattered or damaged beyond repair requires proper disposal. Anyone with a flag in need of retirement may bring it to the Community Museum from now though June 14.

The Community Museum is located at 9 S. Summit Avenue. It is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information please call 301.258.6160, or e-mail museum@gaithersburgmd.gov.
