Immigrants and new Gaithersburg residents now have a support network in their backyard.

The Gilchrist Center for Cultural Diversity recently moved into the Gaithersburg Library space and will officially open its doors during the grand re-opening ceremony for the facility on Jan. 4.

The new office is a satellite location for the center that’s based in Wheaton and offers services in a location convenient for upcounty residents.

“We want to make the Gilchrist Center more accessible to Montgomery County’s large and growing population,” said Bruce Adams, director of the Office of Community Partnerships for Montgomery County.

Programs offered at the new location include English language classes, citizenship preparation, computer skills, financial literacy courses and job skill preparation.

Through programs and courses designed for immigrants and new residents the center works to promote cross-cultural understanding and connect people to public and private services they might not be familiar with.

The Gilchrist Center also has locations at the Wheaton and Germantown libraries.

But the newest addition to the center isn’t the end of expanding their reach in the County.

“Our plan is to establish Gilchrist Center sites in locations throughout the county as part of our effort to make Montgomery County America’s most welcoming community,” Adams said. ” We want to create a strong and welcoming presence in Gaithersburg to serve upcounty residents by connecting them to the services they need to thrive.”
