Inclement Weather Makes for Busy Week for PGA Tour Meteorologist

Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia are some of the more familiar names at the Wells Fargo Fargo Championship at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm this week. But perhaps one of the most important names is Stewart Williams. For the past 25 years, Williams has been the PGA Tour meteorologist. He works out of a small trailer on the grounds.

“I’m here to help them out so they can make good decisions,” he told MyMCM on Saturday, the second straight with steady rain throughout the day but there were no stoppages in play. “We got lucky,” Williams said. “Obviously this is atypical May weather. We should be in the 70’s. It’s definitely a raw day. It just keeps me busier in the weather office.”.

“I’ve dealt with everything weather-wise. I’ve dealt with tornados. We dealt with snow, hurricanes and even here several years ago, we had flooding rain,” Williams said referring to the 2006 Booz Allen Classic at Avenel. “We finished on a Tuesday. I know number 10 was like a river running through it. We deal with it all out here on this Tour.”

Williams’ job is to make educated judgments about the weather but he also gets the big picture. “Weather like this impacts the tournament. It holds the crowds down. Washington hasn’t had a tournament since 2018. You really wanted a good week for the area.”
