January 7:  Summer Camp Guide arrives at Montgomery County libraries, County Recreation Centers, County government offices, and Recreation headquarters. For more information, call 240.777.6840.

January 8:  Basic Spanish Class at Damascus Community Recreation Center

1 p.m. – 2 p.m.  This class will have a small fee to cover the purchase of materials.  Learn to speak basic conversational Spanish that is easy and fun. Call 240.777.6995 for more information.

January 8:  “Fried Green Tomatoes” movie at Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center

1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Free/Gratis.  A housewife who is unhappy with her life befriends an elderly lady in a nursing home and is enthralled by the tales she tells of people she used to know. For more information, call 240.777.8085.

January 11:  New Year’s Party at Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center

Noon – 2 p.m. Starring Frank & Trish Curreri.  Lunch will be provided by Chef Sia with Moulin Rouge Catering. Pre-registration is required by, January 5. Price for meal ages 55-59 is $7. Donations are requested for ages 60+.  For more information, call 240.777.8085.

January 12:    Drum Circle with Stream Orstrum at Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Free/Gratis.  A drum circle is a participatory celebration of life through rhythm.  It creates a sense of joyful inclusion in a community.  For more information, call 240.777.8085.

January 12:  Picasa Photo Program Workshop with Paul Mink at Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center

2:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Free/Gratis. A great opportunity to get individual help with problem- solving from Paul Mink on Picasa. For more information, call 240.777.8085.

January 13:  Dollar Tree Trip with Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center

9:45 a.m. – Noon  Free/Gratis. Take the JCA bus to the Dollar Tree.  Participants must be able to carry their own purchases. The bus will leave the Dollar Tree at 11:30 a.m. For more information, call 240.777.8085.

January 12:  Cornhole League at Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center

6:00 p.m. – 8:45 p.m. $45 per person to play, team shirts are included, register under course # 11873. Get your friends together for the hottest game in town. We are hosting a six-week Cornhole League. There is a minimum of three players and a maximum of six players per team. Must be 18 or older and out of high school to participate. January 12:  Take the “Emergency” Out of Emergency Preparedness at Holiday Park Senior Center

1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Free/Gratis.  Presented by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.  Don’t let this winter’s inclement weather catch you off guard. Jim Resnick, program manager for senior outreach with Fire and Rescue will get you ready in no time. Call 240.777.4999 for more information.

January 15:  Potomac After Hours at Potomac Community Recreation Center

9:15 p.m. – 11 p.m. Cost is $5. Potomac After Hours is a special program for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Please join other middle schoolers for active and creative fun. January 15:  Let’s Move Hype at Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center

January 16:  Holiday Wonderland at Jane E. Lawton Community Recreation Center

1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Family-oriented community event to welcome winter and the New Year. Light refreshments, arts and craft activities, goodie bags, and a holiday-based puppet show by Blue Sky Puppet Theater. Call 240.777.6855 for more information.

January 18:  Third Annual Wounded Warrior Zumba-thon at Damascus Senior Center

10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Suggested donation of $20, or whatever you can afford to give to the veterans. This event is to honor our Wounded Veterans with a Zumba-thon and raise money for them. Call 240.777.6995 for more information.

January 18:  All Aquatics Centers are open.  Recreation and Senior Centers are closed in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER CAMPS BEGINS JANUARY 19 AT 8:30 a.m.

January 20:  100 Mile Challenge Kick Off Event at Holiday Park Senior Center

7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Learn how to get your 100 miles in 100 days and hear Everest Mountaineers Nicky and Bob Lowry speak on how to get “Moving More” in order to stand on the top of the world. Get a free fitness band to wear for 100 days, pick up tracking logs, and t-shirts. There will be personalized body composition measurement and get started moving with fun activities. January 21:   Amish Market Trip with Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center

9:45 a.m. – 12 p.m.  Free/Gratis.  Visit the Amish Market in Laurel.  Participants must be able to carry their own purchases. The bus will leave the Amish Market at 11:30 a.m.  For more information, call 240.777.8085.

January 21:  Move More Montgomery 100 Miles Challenge starts

Start the year off with a healthy challenge for you, your family, and bring the dog! Are you ready to get up and move? Do you want to win prizes? Walk, jog, run a mile a day for 100 days or participate in 20 minutes of continuous physical activity.  It all counts as one mile! Get creative and remember, it’s all about having fun while making a lifestyle change. Fess $15 per individual – $5 seniors (over 55) – $5 to register a dog (includes doggie bandana) – $10 for a t-shirt.

January 22:  Movie Night Hype at Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center

6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. $6 per child (K-5) includes meal, $3 for meal ticket for parents and families.  Register under course 7874 Enjoy games and music. Call 240.777.4900 for more information.

January 28:  Chinese New Year Celebration at Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center

Noon – 2 p.m.  Free/Gratis. Celebrate the Year of the Monkey starring the Splendid Rockville Dancers. Lunch will be provided by our Nutrition Program.  Pre-registration is required by January 20. January 30:  Akhmedova Ballet at Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center

1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Free/Gratis.  The award-winning Akhmedova Ballet Academy will present ballet, contemporary, and character masterpieces. For more information, call 240.777.8085.

January 30:  Superbowl “L” Dance at Holiday Park Senior Center

7 p.m. – 10 p.m. $8 pre-register, $10:00 at the door.  For ages 16 and older with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, vision and/or hearing impairments.  Celebrate the 50th Super Bowl coming with a big dance party.  Wear your favorite team’s jersey and colors.  We will have prizes for most creative football fans.
