MCPS Students Protest President-Elect Donald Trump in Silver Spring (Video & Photos)

111416_protest-2 Instead of being in class on Monday morning, hundreds of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students decided to exercise their first amendment right and protest President-elect Donald Trump by staging a walkout in Silver Spring.

“We’re protesting because we don’t want Donald Trump as our president. I mean we can’t change that but we got to let our voices be heard,” said Flor, a student at Northwood High School.

“We are not here to support the things that he stands for we are here to unite and let our voices be heard,” said Sophia, a student at Montgomery Blair High School.

Students marched throughout the Silver Spring and Wheaton area. Police at the scene said their main concern was keeping both students and motorists safe.

Police at the scene say their main concern was keeping both students and motorists safe.

“Thus far the this has been peaceful but we are worried about their safety as many of them are walking in the roadway,” said Paul Starks, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Police Department.

I am thankful that I live in a community where they value diversity and not everyone is that lucky,” said Lalise, a student at Montgomery Blair High School. “ I want all of them to know that you should feel safe. This is your country as much as it is anyone else’s.”
