Workers With José Andrés’ Nonprofit Released From Hospital After Missile Strike in Ukraine

Staff members working in Ukraine with Chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen (WCK) have been released from the hospital after a WCK site was struck in a Russian missile attack in Kharkiv, according to staff.

“This is the reality here—cooking is a heroic act of bravery,” Nate Mook, CEO of WCK, wrote on Twitter as he shared the news of the strike on Saturday. On Sunday, he shared that three staff members — Yulia, Liza, and Yulia — were “in good spirits” and recovering at the hospital.

WCK is a nonprofit founded by chef, humanitarian and Bethesda resident José Andrés that feeds people in areas suffering from natural or man-made crises.

“To everyone caring and sending good wishes to the team in Kharkiv, thank you, the injured are fine, and everyone is ready and willing to start cooking in another location,” Andrés wrote on Twitter. “#FoodFighters @WCKitchen All our friends are TRUE heroes! Many ways to fight, we do it with food!”

On Tuesday afternoon, Mook shared the staff members were released from the hospital and that the team was at a new kitchen location.

“All of the restaurant staff came back to help prepare meals—and the 3 injured team members have been released from the hospital!” he wrote.
