Metro Worker Falls 35 Feet Down Shaft in Bethesda

A Metro worker is hospitalized this morning after he fell down a utility shaft 35 feet below grade in Bethesda, according to a Montgomery County fire spokesperson.

It happened overnight at the Elm Street Metro shaft near 7272 Wisconsin Avenue.

Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer said firefighters used a rope rescue to extricate the worker from the shaft.

According to Piringer, the worker is in stable condition.

A portion of Wisconsin Avenue was blocked by fire trucks while the technical rescue was underway.
