Montgomery County Muslim Community Mourns Loss of Nadim Khan (PHOTO)

The Montgomery County Muslim community is grieving the loss of one of it’s leaders. Nadim Khan, a career public health advocate who passed away on Tuesday, March 29.

Khan was appointed by Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett in 2007 to serve as the chief of special needs housing within the Department of Health and Human Services. According to the Khan family, he was a public health advocate with over 20 years experience and the founder and executive producer of a TV show. Awaz TV, a show that focused on south Asian news and entertainment, which ran for over ten years in the Washington, D.C. area.

Uma Ahluwalia, director of the Department of Health and Human Services released the following statement on Khan’s passing to MyMCMedia.

“A sad day indeed for us as we said goodbye to our friend and colleague Nadim Khan,” Ahluwalia said in a statement. “He was a thoughtful, gracious man who cared deeply about our community, especially those most in need. He has been a champion for homeless individuals and families and was passionate about his work.”

Prayer services took place at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring on Thursday, March 31. Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal, who attended the ceremony, released a statement on Facebook.

“I am always glad to see my friends at the Muslim Community Center but it was a sad occasion today, as prayers were said for Montgomery County’s Special Needs Housing Director Nadim Khan before he was laid to rest. Nadim devoted his career to finding housing for disabled and homeless clients,” Councilmember Leventhal said. “That’s a great way to use your time here on Earth. My condolences to his wife Yusra, daughter Farah and son Amir, as well as his many friends in the county and especially the Pakistani-American community, where he was a respected leader.”

Khan is survived by his wife Yusra Khan and his two children Farah and Amir according to the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring. Khan’s daughter, Farah Khan, released a statement on behalf of the Khan family via Facebook.
