Northwest Branch Trail Rapist Sentenced to 60 Years

Joaquin-Orellana-Torres-1Joaquin Orellana Torres, 25, of no fixed-address was sentenced Thursday to 60 years in prison for the May 2014 rape of a female jogger on the Northwest Branch trail in Silver Spring.

He pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree rape and one count of first-degree sex offense in March. Judge Steven G. Salant, Circuit Court Judge for Montgomery County, Maryland, presided over the plea and today’s sentencing.

“Today’s sentence sends a strong message. Rape is a violent crime and will not be tolerated in our community. Sixty years is a long time to think about the pain, suffering and mental anguish he wrought upon a victim who was jogging along a path minding her own business. This defendant robbed her of her peace of mind and this is the price he will have to pay,” said John McCarthy, Montgomery County State’s Attorney.
