Panhandling and the Pope: Montgomery Policy Vs. Papal Opinion (VIDEO)

Montgomery County has waged an effort to encourage residents to stop giving donations to panhandlers. In 2013, the county launched “Give a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out,” which called on people to text donations to charities rather than to give cash to peddlers.

Pope Francis, however, has other ideas. The¬†New York Times, in an editorial, described the pope’s position as: Give without worry.

We asked Councilmember George Leventhal¬†his thoughts on the pope’s remarks.
