Proposed Styrofoam Ban to Be Discussed by County Committee Today
The meeting is to be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Third Floor Conference Room before the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee, which is chaired by Councilmember Roger Berliner and includes Councilmembers Nancy Floreen and Hans Riemer. The bill, whose chief sponsor is Riemer and which is co-sponsored by Councilmembers George Leventhal and Marc Elrich, would prohibit the use of certain expanded polystyrene (styrofoam) packaging for food products.
This year marks the start of a complete ban on the use of styrofoam products in Montgomery County. Take-out containers, bowls, cups, plates, trays, egg cartons and any other products made of styrofoam are banned for use within the county from January 1, 2016.
