Seniors Break a Sweat During Fitness Class in Silver Spring (PHOTOS & VIDEO)

While most of us on heading out on our daily commute to work, seniors in Silver Spring are taking part in an early morning fitness class at the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center. Organized by Holy Cross Health, the free classes aim to provide Montgomery County’s senior population with a recreational outlet.

Nearly 500 seniors take part in the fitness classes hosted at the Schweinhaut Senior Center every week. Classes start as early as 8:30 a.m. and take place six days a week Monday thru Saturday. Tuesday’s classes had over 100 participants.Senior Fitness

Holy Cross Health hopes to expand the senior fit program at more centers throughout the county, but funding is one of the main road blocks impeding expansion. The program is funded in part by Kaiser Permanente and event space is provided by the Maryland National Capital Parks and Planning Commission, Asbury Methodist Village and local churches. There are currently 23 locations that host senior fit classes in the County.

Sarah McKechnie is the manager of community fitness for Holy Cross Health.

“There is a cost involved in bringing a program to a facility so we’re always looking for more sponsors for senior fit,” McKecknie said. “Seniors are the largest growing demographic in our area and really across the country so we are looking to provide prevention programs for seniors and senior fit is really one of the best that you can get.”

Linda Fleishman, an 85-year-old resident of Silver Spring and former dance instructor, hopes to see more classes that include dancing in the near future.

“I just like to be active [and] keep in shape. I wish they had Zumba at this particular facility because I used to do Zumba and it’s just fun to be around people you know,” Fleishman said.
