Small Plane Crashes at Airpark (PHOTOS)

UPDATED on 8.25.14 The pilot of a small airplane was hospitalized with serious injuries after his plane crashed, shortly after noon on Aug. 23, while taking off from the Montgomery Airpark, 7940 Airpark Road, in Gaithersburg.

Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer said the pilot was transported as a priority one patient. There were no other people on board the plane, Piringer said.

According to Piringer, the plane was up about 75 to 100 feet in the air when it came down and crashed off the runway. Piringer said there was a small fuel spill but no fire.

The runway was closed for a short time following the crash, Piringer said.

Keith Holloway, a spokesperson for the National Transportation and Safety Board, said the NTSB is investigating the crash and has recovered the Piper PA aircraft.

According to Holloway, the initial investigation indicates the plane’s left wing hit the ground initially.

No other information has been released to date.
