Blair Says He Would Seek Local Regulatory Powers for Firearms

Montgomery County executive candidate David Blair said that if Maryland won’t pass tougher gun laws, he would seek local regulatory powers for guns.

The plan, called “Guns Have No Place in Schools,” includes:

  • Increasing the age for a state concealed carry permit beyond school-age years to 21;
  • Enacting more stringent reporting laws to increase gun owner accountability;
  • Removing guns from a person who is a danger to self or others; and
  • Passing stronger reporting laws to combat gun trafficking, with stricter penalties if caught.

Blair’s announcement comes two days after the school shooting at Great Mills High School in St. Mary’s County and two days before the March for Our Lives, a rally in Washington, D.C., to combat gun violence. March for Our Lives was organized in part by the students at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a gunman killed 17 students on Feb. 14.

Blair distributed free Metro cards so students could attend March 14 demonstrations in Washington as part of a student walkout in recognition of the Parkland shooting.

Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey now give local jurisdictions gun regulatory powers. If he had those powers and if he were elected, he would:

  • Prevent the national gun lobby from influencing county politics by calling on local candidates and elected officials to turn down their campaign contributions;
  • Provide free handgun safes and free safety demonstrations to Montgomery County Public School parents;
  • Fund more school counselors and resource officers;
  • Put telemedicine in our schools to provide students remote access to health and mental health services; and
  • Launch an anonymous tip app for students to report suspicious behavior.

    Why would anyone vote for him when he clearly doesn’t know these Maryland laws already exist? Luckily an armed security guard prevented more children from being harmed.
