County Swim League Heats Up as Season’s End Nears

The Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL) is in its fifth week of competition across the county.  Teams and individuals are running out of time and events to make a move upward in standings or make that cherished All-Star time.  For some MCSL  swimmers, this 4th of July holiday weekend and next can be a bittersweet time.  For seniors who age up and out of their swim careers, this summer fun is coming to an end.

Saturday, I had the occasion to stop by the Qual Valley pool for the Division K competition between the Eldwick Swim Club and the Quail Valley Swim Club.  Like most sunny July Saturday mornings, the starting horn would blare and then the water would glisten in a liquid splash of waved arms.  The league standings did not matter as much as the competition level and the frolic of screaming encouragement to teammates.

But on this weekend and next for those clubs who swim at a home meet it is Senior week.  Usually, only a few swimmers reach the 18th birth year in continuous summer competition.  For three Qual Valley seniors, it was to a send off tradition of nearly 40 years. Those seniors along with their parents walked out on the pool deck at half time for the last time in front of banners made of bedsheets to an adoring team.  Soon these three seniors will be counted on at least one more time in the second half to compete for team glory.

Ah, summertime, what would it be without MCSL swimming in Montgomery County.
