The transformation of the Damascus library is moving full steam ahead, with modifications, upgrades and repairs continuing daily.
New furniture arrived this month, offering a fresh look at what the shelving and renovated interior spaces will be like.
Visitors who have passed by the library recently may have noticed exterior work taking shape, including the installation of new wiring, new signage and waterproof materials.
Repairs also include testing all equipment, alarms and boilers in the basement.
The renovation is aimed at giving the library a new, modern look, with new doors and added study and collaboration rooms. County library officials say they wants to offer residents a more comfortable space to use the library.
“We expect to open in November 2026. Lots of work still needs to be completed,” said Angelisa Hawes, assistant director of facilities and ADA for the Montgomery County Public Libraries.
The Damascus renovation is part of a larger, six-year library refurbishment plan by Montgomery County, funded at $69.65 million for fiscal years 2027 through 2032.
Other branches slated for renovation during that period include the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library in Silver Spring, Twinbrook Library, Rockville Memorial Library, Gaithersburg Library and Olney Library.
Damascus has separately received $500,000 in state aid in fiscal year 2024 and $957,000 in fiscal year 2025 toward its renovation.
