This shroud of secrecy ended when one man self-immolated to protest their racism in 2014, shining a spotlight on the town’s dark past. Man on Fire untangles the pieces of this protest and questions the racism in Grand Saline today.

“Still, the importance of this film is not its ability to vindicate and heroize Americans. Rather, its highest quality is its unabashed truthfulness. As one of the many interviewees puts it, ‘The easier thing to do is try to move past it, instead of sitting with it.‘” – Slug Magazine

“Man on Fire tells a compelling and perennially relevant story” – Screen Anarchy

“…this is an illuminating, thought-provoking tale that illustrates one of the many tragic consequences of America’s failure to fully come to terms with, and to truly confront, the racism of its past, present, and its foreseeable future.” – Screen Anarchy

  • Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center: Complete Female Sage Beauty

    February 20, 2019  8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts, 51 Mannakee St, Rockville, MD 20850, USA

In 1661, only men were permitted to act in female roles on the London stage, and the most famous
portrayer of female roles was a man named Ned Kynaston. The toast of the town, Ned was applauded for his interpretations of Shakespeare’s tragic ladies, especially his Desdemona. But with the stroke of a pen, his world is turned upside-down. King Charles II changes the law to allow women to act. The final straw happens when his loyal dresser, Maria, is suddenly starring in his most beloved role and Ned finds himself working in a bawdy tavern. After losing everything, Ned must pull himself together to adapt to this strange new world—and perhaps get a little revenge for himself.

  • BlackRock Center for the Arts: Victoria Vox

    February 21, 2019  7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Dr, Germantown, MD 20874, USA

With a passion for songwriting, she studied at the Berklee College of Music and took up the ukulele as her main accompaniment. Vox takes improvisational solos echoing the tones of trumpet genius, Chet Baker, solely with her voice. This odd and quirky talent, nonetheless, landed her on The Tonight Show, and on the front page of The Wall Street Journal.

“Vox is an old soul, moving effortlessly between sultry, sexy jazz numbers; sunny, upbeat ditties; and honest R&B ballads, seamlessly weaving her candy-coated vocals through each.” – Baltimore Magazine

“At its essence, it’s a classic volume of love songs—for broken hearts and open ones—and through it all, her yesteryear style shines.” – Baltimore Magazine

“Vox’s commitment to the ukulele is strong, partly because it reminds her of the city.” – The Balitmore Sun
