Firefighters Battle Two Large Fires Tuesday Night

Firefighters battled two separate and significant fires in the county on Tuesday evening.

Fire officials say just before 10:00 pm they responded to a Sport Honda dealership located on the 3000 block of Automobile Boulevard in Burtonsville. It took several hours, and about 75 firefighters to put the blaze out due to the heavy volume of fire throughout the building according to officials. It is believed that the fire originated in the rear of the building near the mechanics, maintenance and parts area. Officials did note that ongoing electrical work was being performed in the building at the time of the incident. Estimated cost of damages is $1.6 M, and the cause of this fire is currently under investigation.

Not too long after that, about an hour later- just before 11:00 pm – firefighters responded to a townhouse fire on the 19900 block of Appledowre Circle in Germantown. Fire officials say there were initial reports of people trapped inside of the home, however all occupants were able to get out safely with no injuries. One firefighter was evaluated for a minor injury.  The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, and officials say it originated in the exterior of the home near the AC/heat pump unit and extended into the town-home. 3 adults and 1 child were displaced. There was about $200 thousand dollars in damages, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
