Five Things to Know Today, May 17, in Montgomery County

1. Heat Wave: The National Weather Service is predicting the start of some hot days with temperatures expected to rise into the 90s today. A code orange air quality alert has also been issued for Montgomery County.

2. Assignment Education: Farmland and Ronald McNair elementary schools will be honored today by State Superintendent Karen Salmon as part of her Maryland Blue Ribbon School Tours of Excellence. Both schools are 2016- 2017 Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools, and assemblies are scheduled at each school to honor the achievements of teachers and students.

3. Virtual Town Hall: Got a question about life in your neighborhood? Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett is hosting an online town hall meeting from 1 – 2 p.m. today. You can send in your questions, here.

4. Retail Pop Up Plaza: A ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony will be held today at 3 p.m. for the new pop-up retail plaza at Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station. For the next six weeks, nearly a dozen retail vendors, each housed in a section cut from an old 4,000-series Metro railcar, will operate on a rotating schedule Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons to provide prepared foods and other sought after items for commuters who exit the station.

5. Ride of Silence: The 11th annual Ride of Silence takes place tonight and there are two locations in Montgomery County. The Olney ride begins at 7 p.m. at the Harris Teeter at 18169 Towncenter Drive. The Rockville ride departs at 7 p.m. from the Rockville Library on Maryland Avenue. Find out more, here.
