Maryland Schools Strengthen Employee Background Checks

A Maryland law that strengthens background checks on potential school employees regarding previous instances of sexual misconduct and abuse went into effect Monday.

The law requires that all schools must contact every place where the applicant previously worked with students or other minors, as well as receive official confirmation that the applicant has not been involved in a sexual misconduct or abuse investigation, save for ones where the applicant was cleared of wrongdoing.

Potential substitute and contract employees also fall under this law. Additionally, the law prohibits companies and agencies from making negotiations that would suppress information about sexual misconduct investigations.
