MCPS Superintendent Jack Smith: “We Must Confront Issues Head On” (VIDEO)

Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jack Smith is commending the work of three principals in a video message posted on the district’s website.

Smith singles out the principals of Damascus High, Robert Frost Middle and Watkins Mill High schools for engaging students in difficult conversations about patriotism and racism.

The Watkins Mill football team was in the headlines earlier this month after a majority of the team’s players took a knee during the National Anthem. The principal of Damascus High School addressed the issue in a letter to her school community last week. Just this week, the principal of Robert Frost Middle School sent a letter home to parents following an incident on a school bus involving some students who participated in a chant that included a racial slur.

“As our community becomes more diverse, we need to not only respect the differences in our backgrounds but to celebrate the richness of our unique lived experiences,” Smith said. Watch his message, below:
