Patuxent River Hosts Sold Out ‘Hidden Figures’ Screening

“Transforming Lives” Commends the Patuxent River (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and The Girls Empowerment Tour for hosting a sold-out screening of the Oscar-nominated film ‘Hidden Figures’ to empower local girls.

On February 18, the Patuxent River (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated joined ‘Hidden Figures’ cast member Karan Kendrick and hosted a private screening of the Oscar-nominated film for area girls.  Over 250 attended the sold-out screening.  In addition, Karen Kendrick of the Girls Empowerment Tour held a private pre-movie session with the Patuxent River (MD) Chapter’s grades 5-9 mentees that focused on choosing excellence at every step of their life’s journey.

The film ‘Hidden Figures’ is based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly and tells the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson – brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.  The screening was held  at the Kentlands Paragon Theater located in Gaithersburg.

The ‘Hidden Figures‘ screening was part of The Girls Empowerment Tour, an exciting 10-city tour across the United States for girls ages 8-12 created by ‘Hidden Figures cast member Karan Kendrick.  The goal for the tour is to empower young girls to choose excellence on every step of their journey, and to show them how that choice can change the world.

The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, consisting of professional women of color in 281 chapters located in 41 states, the District of Columbia and the commonwealth of the Bahamas. The Patuxent River (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is a group of distinguished women, diverse in age and background, who reside in Montgomery County, Maryland and share a common desire to effectively serve this community.

Stay tuned for an upcoming episode of “Transforming Lives” spotlighting the Patuxent River (MD) Chapter of the Links, Inc. and the Girls Empowerment Tour founder, and ‘Hidden Figures’ cast member Karan Kendrick.
