Baby Boom on Leap Day

Leap Day was a busy day for births in Montgomery County.

Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring reported 31 births — with a set of twins, so 32 babies — and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital had three births. Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center reported a dozen.

12 local mothers had their babies at Adventist Feb. 29 according to a release. A nurse in the hospital’s birth center hand-knit frog caps for the Leap Day babies, sometimes referred to as “leaplings,” to wear.

Kiara Beltran and her husband Pedro Cruz, from Silver Spring, welcomed their son, Enzo.

The number eight has special significance in their family, so they plan to celebrate Enzo’s birthday on Feb. 28 during non-leap years, per the release.

McKenzie Knott welcomed her daughter, Autumn.

McKenzie Knott, from Damascus, welcomed her daughter, Autumn.

She plans to celebrate Autumn’s birthday on March 1 during non-leap years.
