2 Dogs Die While Owners Evacuated During Possible Gas Leak

Two dogs died and at least three others were injured while residents at a home in the 7700 block of Carroll Avenue in Takoma Park evacuated in what was thought to be a possible gas leak or fire.

Takoma Park Police responded to a 911 call at 12:28 p.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, they discovered smoke on the first floor coming from a kitchen microwave. Fire rescue officials determined there was neither a fire nor gas leak.

Residents of the home told police they owned eight dogs, two of which were pit bulls and kept apart from the other dogs. However, while they were evacuating their home, the dogs all joined together. One of the pit bulls became agitated and attacked the other dogs, according to police.

Officers contained the pit bull in an upstairs room until Montgomery County Animal Control officials arrived. They took the pit bull away.

Two dogs died, and four others were taken by the owner to a veterinary clinic for evaluation. One of those dogs did not appear injured, police said. The occupants of the house were not injured.
