Car Registration Fees Will Rise Sharply Starting July 1

Due to a shortfall in funds for road construction in the state, Marylanders will soon be paying more for their car registration.

A new law passed in a budget compromise between the State House and Senate, will raise the $3 billion dollars needed by hiking car registration fees by anywhere from 60-75%.

The new legislation adjusts the fees based on class and weight. It also offers a flexible payment plan for a one-year registration. The standard registration fee covers a two-year period.

Other clauses in the law set out new fees for Class E vehicles used for construction, a surcharge for emergency services and an annual surcharge for electric vehicles.

While the law goes into effect July 1, 2024, some adjustments to fees may go into effect until later.
