Champion Oak Transformed into Art in the Park

Thanks to a $10,000 dollar grant by the Montgomery Parks Foundation, an old tree that once shaded the corner of Beach Drive and Cedar Lane in Kensington has a new life. A crowd gathered Oct. 11 to see the unveiling of a whimsical carving by chainsaw master Colin Vale.

This stump sculpture stands among a few other select wooden artworks found in county parks like Brookside Gardens and Jessup Blair Park in Silver Spring. For those interested in watching a work in progress, you can find Colin Vale carving a new bench most afternoons at Ken-Gar Palisades Park, 4140 Wexford Drive in Kensington. Vale hopes to complete that project by Thanksgiving.
