  • BlackRock Center for the Arts: Beth Wood

    January 17, 2019  7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Dr, Germantown, MD 20874, USA

Beth Wood sometimes plays music in her sleep. That’s how ingrained it is. From the moment when a curious five-year-old girl asked her mother if she could take piano lessons, to the moment when the grown woman she has become opens her mouth, her heart, her eyes and her hands to sing her music for a live audience, music has been the constant, the silk thread that never breaks. It has been a forty-year spiritual practice.

“Beth Wood is a musical triple-threat — a thoughtful songwriter and talented multi-instrumentalist with a supple, soulful voice.” — Washington Post

“A woman with the heart of songcraft in her blood and the exceptional musicianship to back it up.” — The Corvallis Advocate

Doors open 30 minutes prior to show. Ample free parking. Cocktails, beer, and wine for sale. Guests are encouraged to BYOF (Bring Your Own Feast) to enjoy at our jazz-style table seating, whether it be a picnic basket of your own munchies or take-out from the enormous array of restaurants within walking distance of BlackRock.

  • Hamilton: A Remix of History and Show Biz

    January 18, 2019  6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Sandy Spring Museum, 17901 Bentley Rd, Sandy Spring, MD 20860, USA

Hamilton: A Remix of History and Show Biz
    January 18 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The debut of Hamilton: An American Musical in February 2015 created a mania for the show that has continued to sweep the country. It was the recipient of 11 Tony Awards, and won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, among other accolades. The exceptionally popular production, with its clever lyrics, hip-hop rhythms, and compelling story, has revived interest in the real lives and true stories of the historical figures that the production highlights.

Historian Richard J. Bell examines this musical phenomenon to reveal what it tells us about the marriage of history and show business, and what this amazing show gets right – and wrong – about Alexander Hamilton and the American Revolution. Hear Bell’s analysis of the ways the musical dramatizes and simplifies the complex events and stories on which the show is based. What does the show’s cultural impact and runaway success tell us about our shared stories and our nation as Americans? The evening includes a special performance by Jade Jones, singing “Satisfied” and “Burn” from the musical.

Richard J. Bell is a professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, who researches and writes about the history and culture of the United States between 1750 and 1877.

Advanced ticket sales end at 5pm on 1/18. All guests, including members, are $20 at the door.

History Happy Hours include happy hour drinks and snacks. The series is sponsored by Therrien Waddell Construction Group.
