Five Ways to Beat the Heat in Montgomery County This Week

With the county-issued heat warning in effect and a heat index expected up to 105 degrees, here are five local ways to stay cool this week.

1. Go for a Swim

Locals can take a dip in one of the 11 pools spread out throughout the county, many of which feature additional amenities including toddler pools, waterslides and a lazy river. County residents can access the facilities either by purchasing a pass for the summer or an all-pool pass that provides year round access. Both subscriptions provide entry into all indoor and outdoor locations. Day passes are also available for purchase.

2. Make a Splash

Families may also enjoy going to a splash pad or waterpark. Splash Park in Germantown offers a 28 jet water maze for $6.50 a person, the splash fountain in Rockville Town Center provides a free option for children to play and cool off in.

For slides, the Water Park at Bohrer Park offers admission to all Montgomery County residents on weekdays and Gaithersburg residents and members on weekends. Prices range from $6 to $16 dollars a person.

3. Learn a New Skill and Enjoy the AC

For those looking to avoid the outdoors, Rockville businesses and organizations offer a variety of creative classes and workshops that allow residents to try something new without breaking a sweat.

On June 25, Hammer and Stain Rockville will teach attendees the art of glass painting at their Wine Wednesday event. Patrons will have the opportunity to enjoy a free glass of wine as they paint their own cup to take home.

On June 26, Hammer and Stain will host another class instructing students to create their own candles and bath teas.

The VisArts Center also has open seats in some of their upcoming programs, including a paper clay sculpture class on June 25 and an oil painting workshop on June 26.

4. Enjoy a Frozen Treat

For a quick cool down, locals can try one of the many local ice cream shops in the county

In Bethesda, Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream and Treats offers a variety of flavors, including seasonal options like Coconut Almond Brownie, Mango Sticky Rice and Banana Pudding, as well as classic varieties, vegan options and alcohol-infused sweets.

In Rockville and Chevy Chase, Mimi’s Handmade serves ice cream and sorbet made from local ingredients. The shop carries unique flavors like Matcha, Wasabi Peas, Sweet Corn and Grilled Beets.

For soft serve and frozen yogurt, Jimmie Cone in Damascus offers a weekly rotation of flavors.

5. Visit a Museum

Locals can explore art and history at one of the many local museums, from admiring paintings at the Glenstone Art Museum to examining the past at the Seneca Schoolhouse. The full list of Montgomery County museums can be found on the Maryland Manual website.
