5 Apps You Can Download to Save Money on Gas

On July 1, Maryland increased the gas tax by 20%, making it the fourth highest gas tax in the U.S.

If you’re planning on hitting the road this summer as many people are doing, knowing which gas stations have the best prices is important.

Here are five mobile apps that can help you in your search:

GasBuddy
This app uses your location to show you all the gas stations nearby along with their prices. It also offers another way to save money through its Pay With GasBuddy Plus program where by signing up you can save 20 cents per gallon when you fill. There are also options for rewards and deals. The program works for 95% of gas stations around the country, according to the website.

AAA
With its clean and simple design, the AAA app makes it easy to view all the nearby gas stations on the map. It gives you options to sort by both distance and price.

Waze
This popular navigation app can show you the closest gas station to you on your route and take you straight there. You can sort them by price in “settings.” It also offers contactless payment for ExxonMobil and Shell card holders, which can be convenient.

Gas Guru
This app has a clean design just like AAA, however, Gas Guru only shows gas prices whereas AAA has other functions. Gas Guru also highlights the stations that have the lowest prices, with yellow indicating “good” prices and green for “great” prices.

Upside
According to the app description, Upside offers a chance for users to earn up to 25 cents per gallon back at over 25,000 gas stations in the country. The way to do this is by paying normally with your credit or debit card, and then either snap a photo of your receipt, or use the “check-in” option which verifies your credit or debit card purchase with the business. Some brands that work with Upside include Exxon, Marathon and Shell.
