About the Digital Futures Institute
The Digital Futures Institute at Montgomery Community Media (MCM) is an initiative focused on building a more inclusive and equitable media future. Through training, mentorship, and access to technology, the Institute empowers emerging content creators with the tools they need to succeed in digital storytelling and production. Its mission centers on racial equity, social justice, and expanding opportunities for underrepresented voices to shape the narratives of our communities.
The Institute encompasses a range of programs that develop both creative and professional skills, including the NextGen Media Lab, an immersive, hands-on training platform for middle and high school students. This lab gives youth access to professional-grade equipment and real-world media projects, preparing them for future careers in media and digital storytelling. Students gain workforce readiness skills, service-learning hours, and the chance to contribute to Montgomery County’s vibrant media landscape.
As part of its commitment to amplifying diverse voices, the Institute also leads the BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ Digital Storytelling Fellowship. This initiative provides aspiring storytellers from Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), and LGBTQIA+ communities with mentorship, media training, and stipends to support the creation of original, impactful stories from their unique perspectives. The fellowship aims to deepen connections within Montgomery County by fostering a broader understanding of diverse experiences through impactful storytelling.
In addition, the Institute includes MCM’s Internship Program, which offers a variety of professional experiences across departments—from journalism and video production to social media and marketing. These internships provide hands-on learning experiences and the chance to contribute meaningfully to community media, while building essential skills for future careers in communications and media.
