County Launches Curbside Dining Pilot in Wheaton

Montgomery County’s new pilot program will allow restaurants in the Wheaton Urban District to turn parking spaces into outdoor seating areas. Starting on July 1, participating facilities can create Curbside Seating Cafes by installing seating and tables outside their businesses at the street level or on raised platforms.

“Outdoor dining adds to the connectivity and vibrancy of the community, and it helps our restaurants grow their business base,” said County Executive Marc Elrich.

According to Montgomery County Department of Transportation Director Chris Conklin, the ideal place for a curbside dining spot is a walkable area with speed limits no higher than 25 miles per hour.

Restaurant owners seeking to obtain a permit need to complete the Department of Permitting Services’ (DPS) checklist, which includes maintaining approval from the Wheaton Urban District, collecting written support from adjacent businesses and paying parking meter fees.

If owners receive permission, they must keep the dining areas clean and maintained.

Interested parties can go to the DPS website or call 240-777-0311 for more information.
