Gaithersburg Driver Sentenced for Killing Couple on Election Day

Davinder Singh, 47, of Gaithersburg, received a sentence of eight years in prison and five years of supervised probation upon his release after being found guilty of homicide by vehicle while under the influence.

Singh was found guilty July 31, 2023, of causing the deaths of Miguel Antonio Ortiz, 65, and Ana Margarita Ortiz, 70, on Election Day. Nov. 8, 2022.

The Gaithersburg resident was also ordered to pay $2,000 in fines during his Feb. 23 sentencing.

Singh, who was been held without bond since March of 2023, has appealed the verdict.

“The loss of Miguel and Ana Ortiz left a devastating void for their four adult children and multiple grandchildren. We express our deepest condolences to the grieving family. This case centers around public safety and we thank the judge for imposing a lengthy sentence,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
