May is Building Safety Month, and the City of Gaithersburg is offering free deck inspections for residents of single-family homes within city limits.

The initiative is led by the City’s Permits and Inspections Division and is intended to raise awareness about the importance of safe and resilient construction practices.

Building Safety Month, now in its 45th year, highlights the value of modern, up-to-date building codes and encourages communities to adopt better practices for creating sustainable structures.

The 2025 theme is “Game On!”, with weekly topics designed to engage and educate the public:

Explore how building safety influences everyday environments where residents live, work, and play.
  • Week 2: Build Your Offense (May 4–10)
Take proactive steps to support building safety initiatives in the community.
  • Week 3: Build Your Defense (May 11–17)
Prepare for natural disasters such as storms, earthquakes, and wildfires using tailored toolkits.
  • Week 4: The Starting Lineup (May 18–24)
Meet the professionals behind building safety and learn about the variety of careers in the field.
  • Week 5: Going Into Overtime (May 25–31)
Look ahead to future trends in building safety, including global standards and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.Residents interested in scheduling a free deck inspection can contact the Permits and Inspections Division by emailing permitting@gaithersburgmd.gov.
