Opera Comes to Garrett Park Elementary School

Garrett Park Elementary School students were treated to special opera piano concerts on Wednesday (for grades K-2) and Thursday (for grades 3-5). As part of the Feel The Opera Initiative, the concerts were performed at no cost to the school and sponsored by MDLO Founder, Artistic Director, and Philanthropist Brad Clark.

“These concerts are some of the most rewarding experiences for the performers as the energy and excitement displayed by the students is really impossible to describe,” Matthew Woorman, General Manager of Maryland Lyric Opera told MyMCM.”We believe strongly that you only get one chance at a first impression and we believe opera is for everyone. Taking down the barriers and demystifying the art form to provide access is important to us as opera is for everyone!” Woodman added.

Since launching this initiative, they have held numerous concerts in local public and private schools that bring professional opera singers and musicians to perform live and interact with students through a live Q&A session after the show.
The programming includes pieces performed in Italian (with projected English titles) from various operas, introduced with context by the school’s music teacher, to allow the audience to experience multiple styles and composers within the genre.Students from other concerts during the 2022-2023 season also received complimentary tickets to attend one of our four productions at the Music Center at Strathmore.
