Police Investigating Silver Spring Shooting as Homicide

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division of the Montgomery County Police Department are investigating the shooting of a 40-year-old Bethesda man as a homicide, the department announced Monday.

Around 5:39 p.m. on March 3, officers found Derek James McBrayer laying on the sidewalk in the 1000 block of Quebec Terrace in Silver Spring, according to police.

The police department said he was suffering from an apparent gunshot to his leg, which was treated at the scene. McBrayer was then transported to a local hospital, where he died March 10.

The Medical Examiner’s autopsy ruled the death a homicide by gunshot wound, and investigators don’t believe the incident to be a random event at this time.

Witnesses heard multiple gunshots and saw about seven or eight men run from the area, according to police. Officers found bullet holes in several vehicles in the parking lot and one in the apartment window.

The police department says anyone with information about the homicide should call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.
