On day 22 of the federal government shutdown, U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) hosted a roundtable in Silver Spring to speak out about Medicaid cuts under the Trump administration and the need to extend health care tax credits.
Silver Spring resident Rebecca Davis is a breast cancer survivor who gets the Affordable Care Act tax credit. Her insurance plan through the state covers the costs of the drug she needs to prevent the cancer from returning. Without the tax credit, Davis is preparing for her premium to spike Nov. 1.
“So now I’m just waiting to see how much that premium will go up, so that I can continue to afford this drug,” she told MCM. Without insurance, Davis said the drug would cost her $12,000 a month.
Raskin said these “very scary changes” will come unless Republicans come back and “engage in the old-fashioned art of legislative compromise.” He called on colleagues to “come back to Washington, reopen the Congress so we can reopen the government, so we can save the health care of the people.”
