Express Digital News Reporter (Part-Time)

Organization: Montgomery Community Media (MCM)
Location: Hybrid – In-office/Studio 1 day per week at our Rockville, Md. office and field reporting the rest of the week.
Hours: Up to 30 hours per week

Job Overview:

Are you interested in digital news writing, storytelling, and building your media skills? MCM is looking for an express news reporter with multimedia skills to write for our news site.

This is a hands-on opportunity for an enterprising reporter with 1-2 years of newsroom experience and an entrepreneurial spirit OR a seasoned reporter who is looking for a part-time news writing job to supplement their life.

The ideal candidate is a journalist who writes, edits, and produces fast-paced, breaking news stories about current events and issues affecting residents of Montgomery County, whose communities make up more than one million people and is one of the most diverse counties in the U.S. in terms of ethnic makeup.  The Digital News Reporter will be expected to research, write, report, and produce news and feature stories primarily for MCM’s website, with supporting content for digital and social media.

What You’ll Do & Learn

  • Pitch story ideas in our daily newsroom meetings for the website.
  • Research stories and fact check information
  • Write 3-4 news stories per shift
  • Produce social media companion posts videos to drive traffic to and complement digital news articles
  • Collaborate with the news team and editors on the storytelling processes
  • Cover local events, government briefings, and community stories in person
  • Collaborate with social media team on news stories and promotions
  • Other duties as assigned

Part-Time Production Technician

Summary:

Production Technicians play a key role in delivering high-quality productions by supporting technical operations for both studio and field projects. This position requires a commitment to excellence in client support, a strong understanding of production equipment and editing techniques, keen attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a production team.

We are seeking a Production Technician to work a regular schedule of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with flexibility for occasional evening and weekend hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform technical functions of production, including participating in field and studio productions.
  • Assist in training other technicians in technical aspects of equipment use.
  • Set up and dismantle all staging materials related to production.
  • Work as a playback operator if qualified and if requested by Management.
  • Operate Electronic News Gathering (E.N.G.) cameras and video editing equipment.
  • Perform the gathering of visual elements and, on occasion, conduct interviews and the integration of those elements into news packages and voice over pieces, suitable for airing on broadcast television programs.

 

Other Functions:

  • The editing of news projects and other video projects.
  • The operation of control room and studio equipment during productions.
  • Ability to comfortably perform various studio roles as needed, including directing, technical directing, operating control room, and studio equipment, running graphics, and reading/loading production scripts and rundown software; strong experience coordinating production crews is preferred.

Perform additional responsibilities as assigned, in alignment with the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians–Communications Workers of America (NABET-CWA) agreement.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with both field/location and in-studio productions. Skilled in post-production and video editing using Adobe Creative Cloud, including working with graphic templates (e.g., MOGRTs). Motion graphics experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of cinematography and digital video production, including technical skills in camera work, lighting, ENG, and broadcast standards for commercial/television and news production.
  • Proven ability to deliver strong customer service and work collaboratively with government agencies, community groups, production/technical teams, and individuals unfamiliar with the production process, while remaining effective under pressure.
  • Serve as a team-oriented partner to internal journalists, producers, and other stakeholders to craft engaging stories and videos.
  • Commitment to community media, Public, Education and Government (PEG) access cable television, first amendment rights and public interest telecommunications.
  • Clean driving record and valid driver’s license required; must have access to a reliable vehicle for off-site assignments, meetings, and events throughout Montgomery County.
  • Must be willing to travel frequently across Montgomery County, and work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts, as outlined by the NABET-CWA agreement.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions, which may include:
    • Lifting and carrying equipment of 40 pounds.
    • Frequent reaching, stretching, twisting, and bending.
    • Prolonged periods of standing.
  • This position falls under a collective bargaining agreement with NABET-CWA. Successful candidates must either be current members or join the union upon hire.

Part-Time Teaching Assistants

MCM Teaching Assistants teach and assist on all studio and field production equipment, and video editing. The MCM Teaching Assistant is a part-time union position, scheduled between 4-20 hours per week, based on MCM’s class schedule, youth training programs and productions  The ideal candidate is skilled in various facets of multimedia production, has a flexible day-time schedule with some weekend and evening availability, and the desire to teach and support all members of the MCM community, including students, interns, seniors and hobbyists.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with instruction – To be knowledgeable about all classroom procedures and media equipment applications. To assist instructors in all aspects of media training, which may include field production, studio classes and editing.
  • In the field production – Assist in teaching the operation of cameras, videotape recorders, lights, microphones, audio and editing equipment.
  • In the studio -Set up the studio and assist in teaching cameras, switcher, character generator, audio board, podcasting, media recorders, teleprompter, and lighting.
  • Student supervision – To act as an MCM representative supervising student projects, edit sessions, field shoots or studio productions. To ensure equipment safety and adherence to project guidelines.
  • Set up studio and classroom prior to production or class.
  • Certification testing – Administer and evaluate written & demonstration tests for certification.
  • Assist in the production of MCM-supervised programing.
  • Assist in the field and in-studio productions and editing sessions for ECE students, Fellows and interns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • An associate degree in television communications or demonstrated experience.
  • Field production skills and in-studio production skills (camera, switcher, lighting, audio).
  • Video editing skills and podcasting and audio production skills.
  • Basic knowledge of emerging digital media technologies.
  • Understanding of instruction methods, particularly in television and/or digital media environment.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, interns and community members who are unfamiliar with multimedia production.
  • Sensitivity and patience in instruction of multi-generational community volunteers.
  • This position requires membership in the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians – Communication Workers of America (NABET- CWA).

Broadcast News Internship – Fall 2026

Location: Hybrid – Remote work, on-location fieldwork, and Rockville, Md. office
Hours: 12–16 hours per week
Employment type: Unpaid (Academic credit is available)

Internship Overview

MCM is seeking motivated Broadcast News Interns to join our newsroom for the fall of 2026. This internship offers hands-on experience in a working broadcast environment where you’ll rotate through key areas of local news production, observing, learning and contributing to real community reporting.

Interns will be introduced to every aspect of our broadcast and digital operations within a structured, supervised environment.

Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities

  • Participate in the daily editorial process: planning, researching, newsgathering, logging and script writing.
  • Accompany reporters and crews on field assignments to learn editorial and technical aspects of broadcast news gathering.
  • Shadow producers and assignment editors to understand newsroom workflow.
  • Pitch, research, and develop stories for broadcast, web and social platforms.
  • Gain on-camera experience through a studio anchor practice session.
  • Cover local events, government briefings, and community stories through field reporting and mobile journalism.
  • Support newsroom staff with daily operations including the assignment desk and production support.
  • Attend professional development sessions and mentorship opportunities with MCM journalists and staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a journalism, communications or related program.
  • Sophomore standing or higher at an accredited college or university.
  • Strong writing, communication and storytelling skills.
  • Interest in television journalism, broadcast production and community news.
  • Familiarity with Montgomery County is a plus.
  • Bilingual skills (especially Spanish) are highly valued.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with video editing tools (Adobe Premiere, iMovie, CapCut, Canva).
  • Experience writing or producing for student TV, radio, or digital publications.
  • Comfort with using social media as a storytelling tool.
  • Interest in community-driven journalism, public affairs, or youth voices.
