Takoma Park Police Offer Advice on Keeping Your Shed Safe

The Takoma Park Police Department (TPPD) warns residents their sheds may not be as secure as they think. Whether a shed is fenced in or not, sheds can be prime targets for thieves. Additionally, thieves could weaponize items inside sheds to break into residents’ homes.

TPPD advises residents to take a few extra precautions to keep your shed secure this summer season:

Maintain your shed. A deteriorating shed is easy to break into, even if you have locks or other safety measures on place.

Lock your shed. Help prevent break-ins and keeping your shed securely locked. Make sure the padlock you use is strong and not attached to any hardware that could be pried off easily.

Cover your windows. Another simple theft deterrent is frosting your shed’s windows or using a privacy screen to block sight of any potential valuables inside.

Make sure the area is well-lit. Sheds in dimly lit areas attract thieves. If they’re not already installed, put up motion-sensor lights surrounding the shed.

Install sensors on your shed. If your shed holds valuables – like vehicles, equipment, or anything else expensive – consider putting in an alarm. Likewise, if your home doesn’t already have monitored security, you may want to invest in a wireless sensor system, which would immediately send your phone notifications of entry.

There is no such thing as a perfectly secure shed, but taking certain precautions can help keep your valuables – and you – safe.
