Takoma Park Sees Uptick in Larcenies, Burglaries and Assaults in 2022

There was an 8% increase in crime in Takoma Park Police between 2017 and 2022, and assault and burglary incidents increased greatly during 2022, according to a newly-released annual police report.

There was a 23% total increase in 2022 for such crimes as larcenies, burglaries, assaults and auto thefts.

In 2021, there were 16 assaults in Takoma Park. Last year, there were 55. In 2021, there were 32 burglaries. This year, there were 90, according to the report.

Crimes including murder, rape and robbery decreased. Murders dropped from three to two, and rapes decreased from four to three.

Most of the crimes reported in 2022 occurred in Ward 6, which was home to 43% of the violations. Ward 2 had the second most.

During 2022, police made 198 arrests, including 12 juveniles. Police issued 23,932 speed camera violations.

During last year, police used or showed force 24 times, including 17 times to gain compliance from a suspect and two to euthanize a deer.

The department has 42 sworn officers and one vacancy.
