‘The Biggest Nuisance’: Agriculture Department Offers Ways to Deal with Asian Tiger Mosquitoes

The Asian Tiger Mosquito “is the biggest nuisance in Maryland,” according to the state Department of Agriculture.

About 60% of the complaints the department receives concern these very small. mostly black with a white stripe on their back insects.

These mosquitoes do not fly very far. 80% of them will fly less than 500 feet, according to the Department of Agriculture. And as most people already have found out, they bite.

Despite their size, “They can be a huge nuisance when you are close to their breeding location,” according to a spokesperson from the department.

The best way to get rid of them is to eliminate their breeding areas, which are containers with rainwater. This should be done soon, before the weather gets warm, according to the department.

Pretty much any object that has even a small amount of room to hold rainwater encourages these mosquitoes to hang around, including toys, tarps, plastic extenders at the ends of gutters and clogged gutters.

Cover these plastic extenders with a fine-mesh material and a rubber band and remove that a few times a year to clean the debris.

Pesticides can kill mosquito larva. The department recommends mosquito dunks or mosquito torpedoes, which should be placed in water where mosquitoes are developing.
