10 County Libraries to Close Sundays Starting Jan. 11

Sundays are no longer an option for borrowing books and media in person at 10 local libraries starting Jan. 11, 2026, according to Montgomery County Public Libraries.

Eight of 18 libraries that currently have Sunday hours will maintain them, according to the county.

The eight branches that will remain open Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. are Brigadier General Charles E. McGee in Silver Spring, Connie Morella in Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Olney, Rockville Memorial, Wheaton, and White Oak. All the other libraries will be closed Sundays.

Sunday hours are being focused at certain locations to make sure there is consistent staffing, stronger programming, and a better experience, according to MCPL. The libraries that will remain open Sundays will get expanded programming on Sundays, like story time events.

The library system has an electric outreach van that will offer services in places where libraries do not have Sunday hours, according to the county. The van has shelving so customers can browse, manage accounts, and return items.

There is a feedback form residents can fill out.

“Montgomery County Public Libraries remains committed to providing exceptional service to our residents. The adjustment to Sunday service hours is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency and ensure we continue meeting the evolving needs of the community. We appreciate the public’s continued support and welcome feedback as we move through this transition,” said MCPL Director Darcell Graham in a written statement.

Maggie Nightingale Library in Poolesville and Noyes Library for Young Children in Kensington are already closed on Sundays.

Damascus Library is currently under renovation and is expected to reopen in fall 2026.
