5 Things to Know Today, Aug. 14, In Montgomery County

Today is Monday, Aug. 14 and here are five things to know today. Weather forecasters tell us to  expect a cloudy day with afternoon thunderstorms.

1. Maryland Tax-Free Week: From August 13-19, Maryland waives the state’s 6% sales tax on qualifying clothing and footwear under $100.

2. Fall Recreation Registration opens for most programs and activities today at 6:30 a.m.

3. Agricultural Fair: Today (and Wednesday) is Family Day at the fair with all day ride wristbands available for a discounted price. The fair runs through Saturday, Aug. 19. MCM has a booth at the fair, please stop by Wednesday or Friday.

4. Writing Workshops: The Gaithersburg Library is partnering with the non-profit organization Write to Right to offer free writing workshops for elementary and middle school students. The week-long creative writing workshops will take place at the library at 18330 Montgomery Village Ave, from today, Aug. 14 through Friday, Aug. 18. There may still be time to register as the workshop take place each day from 1-3 p.m.

5. Check Before You Go: Numerous recreation facilities close this week for cleaning. They include the Germantown Indoor Swim Center closed through Aug. 27, the Olney Swim Center closed through Aug. 20, the North Potomac Senior Center, and the Wheaton Senior Center closed through Aug. 20. The Clara Barton, Damascus, Germantown, North Potomac, Wheaton, and Wisconsin Place Recreation Centers are closed through Aug. 20.
